Where a Friend is a Friend

Voted Northern Ireland's Pub of the Year

If Percy French had ever written about this pub, there’s only one title which would fit:
‘The Star of the County Down’.
It’s in an idyllic setting at the foot of the Mournes, just outside the village of Dundrum and 6 miles from Newcastle town. The family which own it sets its ideals sky high. And it definitely shows.
When we called here, sitting in the outdoor area wasn’t only like sitting in the heart of the country: we were sitting in the heart of the country.
Like Percy French’s, the beer garden was bunged.
The staff were excellent as usual and the whole bar area as well as the outdoor area was kept spotless.
This great pub simply cannot be overshadowed…even by the Mountains of Mourne.

Percy French

Oh, Mary, this London's a wonderful sight,
With people all working by day and by night.
Sure they don't sow potatoes, nor barley, nor wheat,
But there's gangs of them digging for gold in the street.
At least when I asked them that's what I was told,
So I just took a hand at this digging for gold,
But for all that I found there I might as well be
Where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea.

The Sunroom

Join us for an evening's craic, relax in the cosy fireside ambience and enjoy our regular live music nights.

But is it the traditional cooking, the friendly village atmosphere or the warm welcome? Whatever it is, you are welcome to sample it for yourself.

The Food

The menu, as you would expect, has a traditional home-cooked feel to it, with starters such as steamed mussels with garlic and white wine sauce served with garlic bread or a duck confit served with tangy orange syrup.

The Bar

After our meal we retired to the bar and soaked up the ambience. The bar staff informed us that later an 'open mike' session would take place, but alas we were unable to stay for this - maybe next time

Every plate achieves that elusive, cuisine-defining balance of sweet, salty, and sour — even dessert.

The Maghera Inn and Bistro is a fabulous rural eatery providing quality traditional cuisine. The service is excellent and the warm and welcoming environment makes for a perfect night out. We both vowed to return again soon.

Restaurant Review

This was the Inns Sunday menu even though it was Tuesday but never mind - it was good wholesome grub. And after getting a wee look at their evening menu, I reckon I'll be back for a taste of their venison and prune pie and a few glasses of vino.

I'm not sure how I'd sell that dish to a five-year-old, so he ain't coming.
